What it costs in Mexico

What the data law requires
If you store your customers' name, email, WhatsApp or birthday, Mexico's Federal Law on the Protection of Personal Data Held by Private Parties applies. In practice, for a loyalty program:
- Have a visible privacy notice before the customer signs up.
- Ask for separate permission to send promotions; don't assume it.
- Offer a simple way to unsubscribe.
This isn't legal advice. If you have questions, check with a lawyer.
City guide
Tulum and Riviera Maya
Many customers are tourists and some return only a few times. Two adjustments:
- A short card. With 5 or 6 stamps, a one-week visitor can complete it.
- Residents first. The local customer who comes in every day gets the most out of a stamp program.
If a large share of your customers speak English and use iPhone, it matters more that the card be in Apple Wallet and in English.
Mexico City
Office and neighborhood customers, with very frequent visits in areas like Roma, Condesa or Polanco. A card of 8 to 10 stamps fills up in a few weeks. With offices nearby, a one-stamp-per-visit rule keeps a big order from filling the card at once.
Mérida
Hot almost all year: cold drinks and ice cream shops sell steadily. If your traffic drops in summer because of vacations, consider double stamps for those months.
Oaxaca
Specialty coffee and mezcal bars, with domestic and international tourism. In bars, the reward shouldn't push people to drink more: the restaurants and bars guide explains why.
Guadalajara
Lots of specialty coffee shops and neighborhood bakeries. A reward the customer already buys, like their usual coffee, tends to work better than a new product.
Monterrey
Higher tickets in some categories and heavy car use. If ticket size varies a lot between customers, compare stamps against points before launching.
What we say about each city is a general observation to guide the design, not a measurement: check it against your own sales.
How to launch it at your shop
- Define the rule in one sentence: how many stamps and what reward.
- Put the QR next to the register and on the tables.
- Give the staff a set line for every checkout.
- Give 2 welcome stamps: a card with a head start gets completed more, according to Nunes and Drèze (Journal of Consumer Research, 2006).
- Check each month who comes back and who stopped coming.
