Loyalty card in Buenos Aires: how to get customers to choose your shop over the one across the street
In short: in Buenos Aires the problem is not that customers stop drinking coffee. It is that they have three other options within a block and switch out of habit or convenience. A stamp card gives them a reason to keep choosing yours. The reward should be a product, not a discount in pesos, so it keeps its value when prices change. For office-area cafés, 8 to 10 stamps with one stamp per day; for neighborhood bakeries, 8 to 10 as well, bearing in mind purchases are more spread out.
This guide is for owners of cafés, bakeries, ice cream shops and counter businesses in the City of Buenos Aires and its suburbs. The country overview is in the Argentina guide.
The local problem: competition on every block
In neighborhoods like Palermo, Villa Crespo, Caballito or Microcentro it is common to find several cafés and bakeries on the same block. Customers are not disloyal on purpose. They walk into the door on their way, try the new place on the corner and go elsewhere because the line was shorter.
In that setting, good coffee is not enough to keep people. Plenty of shops have good coffee. What changes the decision is a concrete reason to walk into yours and not the one next door: the card that is two stamps short.
A second trait matters: the office routine has changed. Many people go to the office a few days a week and work from home the rest. So office customers buy less often than it seems, and neighborhood customers may show up on a Tuesday mid-morning.
How many stamps and what reward
The one-stamp-per-member-per-day rule stops someone buying coffee for the whole team from filling the card at once. The card then counts visit days.
| Area and customer type | How they buy | Suggested stamps | Suggested reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Offices (Microcentro, Puerto Madero) | 2 to 4 days a week, Monday to Friday | 8 | House coffee |
| Residential neighborhood (Caballito, Villa Urquiza) | Bread and pastries, 2 or 3 times a week | 10 | Half a dozen pastries |
| Leisure area (Palermo, San Telmo) | Mix of neighbors and visitors, weekend peaks | 8, with welcome stamps | Drink of choice |
With 8 stamps and three visits a week, the office customer earns the reward in under a month. That distance feels reachable from day one.
These are starting points. Validate them with your own sales after the first month.
Why the reward should be a product
With prices rising often, a reward like "a discount of so many pesos" goes stale fast. Either you update it all the time or it loses value for the customer. A product reward, such as a coffee, a slice of cake or half a dozen pastries, keeps its value on its own.
It also protects you. If the reward is a product, its real cost follows your cost of goods and not a number you wrote six months ago.
Examples by business type
All three cases are hypothetical and show how the card changes by business type and neighborhood.
Specialty café in Microcentro (hypothetical). Almost all its customers work in nearby offices. Fridays and Mondays are quieter. Card of 8 stamps, reward: a house coffee. One QR is stuck on the till and another on the pickup counter. Staff use a fixed line at every sale: "Want to add your stamp?" The café guide has more counter ideas.
Neighborhood bakery in Caballito (hypothetical). Local customers, many families, bread every day and pastries at the weekend. Card of 10 stamps, reward: half a dozen pastries. Since purchases are frequent but tickets are small, the reward should be something customers already buy. The bakery guide has more reward examples.
Ice cream shop in Palermo (hypothetical). Busy from October to March and much quieter in winter. Card of 8 stamps, reward: a quarter kilo of ice cream. To keep visits going in the cold months, you can offer double stamps in winter. The ice cream shop guide explains how to plan that season.
Google Maps reviews
With so much choice on one block, new customers compare on Google Maps before walking in. In Club Card you can set 5 stamps for a Google Maps review and 2 for TripAdvisor, once each. Ask them to say how it went, not for a good review.
Phones, data and pricing in dollars
In Argentina 87% of phones run Android and 13% iOS (StatCounter, September 2026). So almost all your customers can save the card to Google Wallet. The rest use it in the iPhone browser with its code; Club Card is not saved to Apple Wallet.
If you store your members' name, email or WhatsApp, Law 25,326 on Personal Data Protection applies. In practice: say what you use the data for and offer a simple way to unsubscribe. This is not legal advice.
Club Card charges in dollars. What you pay in pesos depends on the exchange rate on the day of the charge.
How to tell if it is working
After a month, check three things in the dashboard: how many members joined, how many came back at least once and how many stopped coming. If many join and few return, the card is too long or the reward is not appealing. If almost everyone completes the card in a week, it is too short.
If you also have a shop in another city, compare with the Córdoba guide.
