Loyalty card in Mexico City: how to compete with the chains from your counter

In short: in Mexico City, a neighborhood coffee shop competes with chains that already have their own points app. A stamp card gives the customer who walks by every day on the way to work a concrete reason to come back. Go with 8 to 10 stamps in office areas and 6 to 8 in residential neighborhoods, one stamp per day and a reward the customer already orders. The most useful piece of data is knowing which member stopped coming.

Club Card's card, counter app, dashboard and signup are in Spanish only.

The capital had 9,209,944 residents in the 2020 Census, according to INEGI. For a counter business, what matters is something else: who walks down your block, at what time and how often they come back. This guide goes from the general to the specific: the local problem, how the card changes by neighborhood, example businesses and how to set it up with Club Card. For the country overview, see the Mexico guide.

The problem in Mexico City

In many neighborhoods there are several coffee shops within a few blocks, plus the chains and convenience stores that also sell coffee. Customers have options at every step and switch places without thinking. The chains also already reward frequency with their app.

An independent coffee shop doesn't win that fight with discounts. It wins with what a chain doesn't have: the barista who knows the order, the house bread, the neighborhood brand. The stamp card puts that on the customer's phone and lets you see who comes, how often and who stopped coming.

How the card changes by area

The city doesn't buy the same way everywhere. Before deciding how many stamps to ask for, think about who your regular customer is.

Type of areaRegular customerSuggested stampsSuggested reward
Office corridorOffice worker, Monday to Friday, 8 to 108 to 10Americano or next size up
Residential neighborhood with local lifeNeighbor who comes 2 or 3 times a week6 to 8House drink or sweet bread
University areaStudent on a tight budget8Small coffee or free extra
Weekend outing areaSaturday and Sunday visitor5 to 6Weekend special drink

These figures are a starting point. After that, look at your first weeks of data and adjust.

Example businesses

All three cases are hypothetical and show how to reason it through.

Counter coffee shop in an office corridor (hypothetical). Sells mostly between 8 and 10, Monday to Friday. The loyal customer comes four days a week. A 10-stamp card fills up in about two and a half weeks. The reward is an americano, which costs little. Fridays can have double stamps so the customer doesn't skip the last day.

Specialty coffee shop in a residential neighborhood (hypothetical). Less rush, more conversation. The customer comes two or three times a week, sometimes with their dog or with the family on Sunday. A 7-stamp card reaches the reward in about three weeks. The reward can be the house drink, which also invites them to try something new.

Juice bar next to a transit station (hypothetical). Low ticket, very fast sales, everything to go. The QR goes in the line and the stamp is given at handoff. This type of business has its own guide: juice bars.

Office workers and hybrid work

With hybrid work, many office workers no longer go in every day. A coffee shop in an office area may see its loyal customer drop from five visits a week to three. The card shows you that change in the dashboard: if a member who came daily now comes twice, you didn't lose them; their routine changed.

Two adjustments that tend to help:

  1. Double stamps on slow days. If your Mondays and Fridays are empty, that's where the promotion goes.
  2. Orders for the office. The member who brings four coffees to their team earns their usual stamp. If you want to reward them more, you can add a separate rule.

iPhone and Android in Mexico

In Mexico, 72% of mobile phones run Android and 28% iOS, according to StatCounter (September 2026). In the capital's office areas you may see more iPhones than the national average. With Club Card, on Android the card is saved to Google Wallet; on iPhone the member uses it in the browser with their code. For the counter staff it's the same: scan the code and add the stamp.

How to launch it at your shop

  1. Choose the reward and the number of stamps with the table above.
  2. Put the QR where the line forms, not just at the register.
  3. Give the staff a short line: "Scan the QR and get your first stamp today."
  4. Give the first stamp on signup. It helps the member come back.
  5. Check the dashboard after two weeks and adjust.

If you have two or more locations, each one gets its own QR and the dashboard shows which one adds the most members.

Stamps for reviews

In a city with so many options, Google Maps reviews carry weight when someone searches for coffee nearby. With Club Card you can give 5 stamps for the review on Google Maps and 2 for the one on TripAdvisor, once each, when staff see the published review. Each platform has its own rules; you decide whether to turn it on.

How Club Card handles it

Club Card builds your business's stamp card with your logo and colors. Our team does the setup and the club lives at your own address within getclubcard.com. You get a CRM with each member's data, a dashboard for the owner and a QR per location. It costs USD 39 a month; the amount in pesos depends on the exchange rate. The first 20 coffee shops get a founder price of USD 29 a month for 12 months. No setup fee and no contract. See pricing, the coffee shops guide or compare with Tago. If your business is outside the capital, also see Guadalajara or Monterrey. To get started, go to signup.

Frequently asked questions

Does a stamp card work if there's a chain on my block?

Yes. The chain rewards with its app; you reward with your product and your service. The card gives the customer a concrete reason to choose you when both options are right in front of them.

How many stamps work best in an office area?

Between 8 and 10, because the customer comes almost every workday. In residential neighborhoods, 6 to 8 usually works better.

How much does it cost in pesos?

Club Card costs USD 39 a month. The amount in pesos depends on the exchange rate on the day it's charged.

Can I have one card for two locations in different neighborhoods?

Yes. Each location has its own QR and the stamps go to the member's same card. The dashboard shows how many members each location adds.
